Winchester loft conversions are dominated by the Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and those roofs were never built to be lived in. Expect a cut roof with purlins, no ceiling joists worth calling a floor, and a chimney breast running through the middle of the best space. They convert beautifully once designed properly. The constraint is the outside: in the conservation areas a rear dormer that is obvious from the street will not get through, so the design has to work with rooflights or a dormer set well down the rear slope.
Converting a Winchester terrace loft is as much a design exercise as a build. The purlins are usually where you want head height, the chimney breast is usually in the middle of the best room, and the party walls have to be raised and fire-separated on both sides. The reward is that these lofts have real volume and real light once opened up, and a rooflight scheme on the rear slope will often get through where a dormer would not.

Will Winchester City Council allow a dormer on my roof?
Outside the conservation areas, often yes, subject to size and position. Inside them, a dormer visible from the street is very unlikely to be accepted, and on a listed building it is a different application again. Rooflights set flush into the rear slope are the usual answer and they work well on these roofs.
Can the chimney breast stay in my Winchester loft conversion?
Often it has to, and it can usually be designed around — it becomes the divide between the bedroom and the en-suite, or it is boxed into storage. Removing it is a structural job needing support from below, and in a listed building it needs consent as well.
