Loft conversions in Hook
A bedroom, a bathroom and a staircase where there used to be cold water tanks and a stack of boxes.
Loft conversions in Hook
What the job usually looks like here.
The estate houses around Hook were built later and generally with more generous roof pitches, which is good news: a lot of them come in comfortably over the head height you need, and a rear dormer under permitted development is often all it takes. The older cottages in the village centre are the opposite problem — shallow pitch, low ridge, and usually not worth converting.
A good number of the Hook estate houses convert with rooflights alone — no dormer, no planning application, and a noticeably shorter programme because the roof is barely opened. Where a dormer is needed it goes on the rear slope and stays under permitted development. The thing we check first in Hook is not the roof at all but the landing below: several of the standard house types here have a landing too small to take a new staircase without borrowing from a bedroom.

Do I need planning permission for a loft conversion in Hook?
For a rooflight conversion or a rear dormer within the volume limits, normally not — it is permitted development, though you still need Building Regulations. Anything on the front roof slope does need permission, and Hart District Council take a closer look at the older village properties.
How long does a loft conversion take in Hook?
Six to ten weeks for most of the estate houses here. The scaffold goes up at the start and stays up, and the roof itself is only open for a short planned window. On a rooflight conversion, where no dormer is formed, it is at the shorter end.
