Why does the mortar type matter on an older Hook property?
Because the mortar is meant to be the sacrificial part. Lime is softer than the brick, so moisture and movement go through the joint. Cement is harder, so it goes through the brick face instead and the face spalls off. On a solid-walled property the right mix is not a preference, it is what keeps the wall intact.
How do I know if my Hook property needs repointing?
If you can rake the joint out with a screwdriver, or mortar is crumbling and dropping at the base of the wall, it is due. Patches of it on an older village property are normal and do not mean the whole elevation needs doing. We will tell you which you have got.
