Garage conversions in Basingstoke

What the job usually looks like here.

Basingstoke has integral garages by the thousand — they came as standard on much of the estate housing from the 1960s onwards — and most of them are now storing a freezer and a bike. Because they are integral rather than detached, they are already inside the thermal envelope on two or three sides, which makes them among the cheapest rooms in the town to create. The one thing to check first is whether the estate has enough on-street parking to lose a space.

We convert more garages in Basingstoke than anywhere else we work, simply because the town has so many of them. The standard job is an integral single garage on a 1970s or 80s house becoming an office, a playroom or a fourth bedroom. Two Basingstoke-specific things to watch: several of the estates have restrictive covenants from the original developer about changing the frontage, and on the tighter closes the loss of a parking space genuinely matters, so we look at the drive before we look at the garage.

Questions

Garage Conversions, answered.

If yours is not here, ring 07502 002750 and ask.

Will I lose parking if I convert my Basingstoke garage?

Only if you were actually parking in it, and most people are not. What matters is the drive in front. If it takes two cars you lose nothing. On the tighter closes at Popley or Brighton Hill it is worth thinking about, and we will say so rather than just taking the job.

Do I need Building Regulations approval to convert a Basingstoke garage?

Yes. Planning permission is usually not required, but Building Regulations always are — the floor build-up, insulation, ventilation, electrics and the new opening all have to be signed off. We make the application and deal with the inspections.
